Currently sitting on the couch, in a little fort of pillows and blankets, watching Tom and Jerry struggling to fight off a cold. You know how you can feel a cold coming and still have a little hope that it'll pass without actually turning into something? Well, that was me Monday and Tuesday and today (Wednesday) man oh man did it hit me. I have been so out of it today and just feeling so down and wanting to crawl into bed and stay there forever. But I have the biggest fear of not being able to then sleep at night if I sleep during the day so I've been attempting to distract myself.
But I wanted to pull myself together to write a little post about how I fight a cold - or at least try to fight a cold. First of all, the best thing is to start working on healing your body as soon as you're feeling sick. This can either stop the cold from progressing or at least shorten the length of the "suffering".
First thing is drinking lots of tea. Seemingly obvious but drinking lots of the right tea can really do a lot. I've already had four cups today and I'm not done yet. My favorite for a cold and sore throat is lemon ginger tea - and if you have it you can always add some honey which is good for coating the throat. Both lemon and ginger are great because their boost your immune system and work as natural medicine for your body. I also read last night that Chamomile tea is supposedly great for soar throats - so before you go to bed make a nice cup for that to sooth you before going to sleep.
As well as tea, drink lots and lots of water - do it year round but if you are "bad" at drinking water normally, do yourself a favor a drink a little extra during your down days.
Second is eating. When sick it is incredibly important to help your body heal and in order to do that you need to feed it whole, nutritious foods. Even if you don't feel like eating you still should. Trust me, with a sore throat I have been having the worse taste in my mouth and the soreness of my throat just makes me want to forget about food and live off of tea. BUT tea is not going to cut it! Eat lots of veggies and fruits for natural vitamins, antioxidants and nutrients, lean proteins and whole grains (such as quinoa). The good thing is that it's soup season! So if you're not in the mood to eat a big whole meal, then make a delicious soup with all of the goodies above. It doesn't need to be anything complicated it can just be a simple veggie soup!
Third. Vitamins. Eat your dang vitamins people! Don't just do it when you are sick or when you are starting to get sick - but get into a rhythm of it before. It won't 100% prevent you from getting sick, but they can help and lead to less sick days. I eat my vitamins everyday but here I am still sick but I am sure it would be 10 times worse if I wasn't good at taken them!
That's all I have energy for right now but focusing on these three little tips for fight your cold really will help. I cannot stress enough how important it is to eat and drink though - so even if you really aren't feeling for it do try to get just a couple of bites and sips in throughout the day.
